Sherman Township

JUNE 8TH, 2024

I am pleased to announce that once again Sherman Township was awarded the Scrap Tire Grant from the State of Michigan for 2024! The grant is for the disposal of residential scrap tires located within Sherman Township only, and is made possible by the actions of you Township Board.

The location of the receiving site is the same as last year. We have partnered with Burleigh Township once again to receive the tires at 3720 M-65 between Keystone Rd. and Dyer Rd. between the hours of 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM. No early arrivals please! We once again thank Burleigh Township and Keystone Mineral for all their support and generous use of their facility.

Also, on June 8th, 2024, we will be supporting a Sherman Township Clean-Up Day for residential trash. Dumpster locations this year will be at the Rainbow Gardens, on the unpaved area of their parking lot. The Township location last year made it too difficult to access the dumpster so hopefully this will be much better location. Hours will be from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. No early drop-offs please! Most trash is acceptable with some exceptions, such as paint, shingles, flammable and building materials, etc. The site will be shut down once the dumpsters are full. A big Thank you goes out to Vince for allowing the Township the use his facility, so please stop in and have one of his famous burgers and your favorite beverage to show your appreciation! You will have to show this letter with the label attached to enter either clean up areas. Thank you so much for helping clean up Sherman Township.

Your Township Board and support staff have been very busy these days. The township Board unanimously approved the 24/25 budget with a list of many Township improvements. There will be two major road projects performed this summer. Turtle Rd. from National City Rd. East for one mile is going to be rebuilt. A new sand and aggregate base along with slope restoration will happen early this summer. The total cost for this road restoration is $203,637.25, and the ICRC contribution will be $61,091.25. Township funds for the road repair will be paid for from the marihuana licensing fees.

Another road project for this summer will be the repaving of Sand Lake Rd. from Alabaster to Turtle Rd. The asphalt is now in very poor condition and needs to be repaired before and further deterioration occurs. The cost of for this restoration is $119,059.16. The work will consist of machine grading for widening, the application fo 1280 tons of hot mix asphalt (HMA) along with 10 tons of HMA for approaches. The ICRC is also sharing in this improvement cost. The Township contribution will be $83,341.41 and ICRC will contribute $35,717.75. Township funds for the road repair will be paid for from the marihuana licensing fees.

Other projects approved by your Township Board include repairs and improvements to the Township Hall. The crawl space has been encapsulated and the back corner of the structure has been stabilized. The foundation had settled over three inches and was damaging the brick veneer. Also, a sump pump and discharge piping were installed. This summer we will see a generator, parking lot extension and upgrade including lighting and drainage installed at the hall. But the big news is that we will be installing a bathroom with running water and a raised septic field! That has been a long time coming! I once again thank the Township Board for all of their support and brainstorming regarding these improvements. All these improvements will be paid for from the marihuana licensing fees.

Please enjoy the clean-up opportunities provided and don’t hesitate to call if you have any questions. If you would like to volunteer to help, we would really appreciate it! Give me a shout if you do and I will point you in the right direction. Township contact information can be found at
